Maitreyee Chakraborty,  based in Boston, MA is a promising singer in the tradition of Rabindrasangeet, the music of the famous poet and Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore.  She moved to Los Angeles from Kolkata more than two decades ago and has performed in various venues of the USA, including the North American Bengali Conference, FOBANA (Bangladesh cultural conference), American educational institutions and various Bengali organizations in the entire US.

 

She has 17 years experience as a music instructor. She teaches Tagore music to children and adults. Her singing style is melodious, bold and she has received acclaim from the audience as an emotive and soulful singer. To Maitreyee, Tagore’s music is a way of life, her very own. As she tried to fit into a foreign society far away from her beloved Kolkata, Tagore's words and melodies gave her solace and an ideological direction.​

Class Description

Class starts off by introducing the basics- the note and scale recognition, voice exercises, and introduction to raagas and bandishes. Students will learn the concept of 'taala' or rytham. After some group preparation will introduce them to the Tagore.

Maitreyee starts off with songs by explaining what the melodies mean. She translates it line by line.......not in an archaic English, but relatable English.

She teaches students to be independent, does not accompany them in harmonium. She teaches to sing on tanpura. She teach them to read the notation and to play harmonium.
